Whether you’re an avid user of Instagram or just log on once or twice a week to check out family photos, you’ve probably heard one or two things about this “new instagram algorithm”. If not, let me catch you up to speed. Back in 2016 instagram put the X to the old chronological order of posts and started showing users the posts that they are “most likely wanting to see”. While this is well intentioned, it has put a lot of businesses and blogs on stand stills in terms of growth on Instagram and visibility.
Now the other major change that the app has undergone is the monitoring of how fast, how many, and how spam-like people are engaging in instagram. This is to prevent the use of bots and automated growth machines.
These changes are meant for good but ultimately have brought the tiniest bit of evil upon us. By “us” I mean those of us who are wanting to start or have started a blog after the days of the algorithm change. It’s making it so much harder for new bloggers and businesses to grow on the platform which leads to them searching for alternative vehicles of growth, e.i. automation, bots, or just plain liking and commenting 24/7.
Whichever you decide to use, it IS now very essential that (if you’re looking to grow your brand on instagram) you engage and you engage often. And that’s what instagram wants right?
Okay that’s dramatic, that IS what instagram wants, but they’re making it EVEN harder for those trying to “beat” the algorithm by upping their engagement, because they are then looked at as spam.
I recently underwent kind of my last straw with instagram….pictured below.
Yes! I was blocked from liking photos for a whole 24 hour span! Now for my personal page that is almost nothing, but for a page that literally survives on engagement, I was in a rut.
What To Do:
For those of you here who are wondering what to do in this situation. Literally do nothing. Leave your likes aside, better yet, leave your phone aside and just chill. If you’re like me and need to engage because you’ve built a community, just try and be conscious about not liking and only commenting. It held me over for the day and still kept my engagements up.
What I Did:
So as I said above, I literally just commented for the day. There was no way I could just “leave” my instagram for 24 hours. It’s hard to say that seriously, but it’s true. I had content planned and I wanted to see it through. With that being said, this experience did open my eyes to a lot of things, which I’ll elaborate on below…
- Instagram has the control!
I’ve read from a lot of successful bloggers that you shouldn’t put all your eggs in the instagram basket. But I’ve also seen other successes ONLY use instagram and continue to do fine. Each person has found what has worked for them and that is great, but what works for them is not always what works for you personally. So I am wanting to go with what makes the most sense and finally the multiple basket analogy has started to make sense. Instagram literally stopped just a fraction of my production that day and it threw me off SO MUCH! And y’all, I wasn’t even fully blocked, shadowbanned, or any other of the good (scary) things instagram can do to users on THEIR APP!
- You own your blog!
While instagram has the power on instagram, no one has the power on your blog but you. You decide when to post, when to share, how much, and how little. And it’s great! Speaking from experience, we put SO much effort into instagram (an awesome platform) but a platform that ISNT OURS. But what are we doing with our blogs? I know at times, I’m literally just letting mine sit. And that is a waste. The truth is, instagram can do whatever they want with our accounts and WE can do whatever WE want with OUR BLOGS!
- You don’t pay for what you don’t get!
Say you went to the dry cleaner to get your favorite jacket detailed and they just NEVER DID IT!? You wouldn’t pay for that would you? No. So, why would you pay for a beautiful blog theme, WordPress package, hosting site, plugins, logo makers, and all the other things that go into just starting out your blog if you’re not going to use it? In a rational world you wouldn’t, but lull and behold there are still some of us who are letting our investments just sit without putting any work into them! I am a prime example of this, but I don’t want to be anymore.
So to instagram who blocked me from liking for a day; I was just trying to grow the way you told me to grow!! But I’m not mad anymore, because you’ve opened my eyes to see what’s important and that is my site. I still LOVE instagram and of course I’m going to use it! I just want to LOVE my blog more and log in, post, engage, strategize, and network just as many times as I do in the app.
Thanks for reading y’all!
