Do you remember second grade, when you had a polka dotted rain coat, backpack, sweater, or all of the above? Well strap on your velcro sneakers because the trend is back, and its way bigger than than the second grade playground.
If you’re like me, when you first saw polka dots on your favorite clothing websites, you were probably thinking that the models were stealing clothes from Minnie Mouse’s closet. Trust me, this trend did take a lot of getting used to, but after seeing dot after dot I’ve come to realize that this polka dot thing is perfect for the the spring (and obviously Im a poet).
Hear me out. A lot of polka dots can be, well, a lot. I mean, just look at me in this red strawberry uniform. It’s cute, but at first glance you sort of think, “holy fire truck”. However, I personally am adoring polka dots more in moderation. This being in skirts, short dresses and anything else that doesn’t cover the entire body. Soooooo basically the opposite of what’s pictured here. Don’t worry though, here are a few different ways you can look at polka dots.
The Skirt:
Black and white is such a classic combo, it’s hard to go wrong with it and this black and white polka-dotted skirt is no different. It’s figure hugging at the top for a shapely affect and ruffles at the bottom for more of a girly, spring-y feel. This kind of piece is great because it can be styled in so many different ways. It’s like a basic with a twist, (or a dot) and looks the best paired with solid colors and items that aren’t too busy. Here I opted for a more street casual look with a comfy black velvet hoodie, but this skirt would also look great with styles like crop tops, tanks as well as vibrant colors like red and yellow!
The Jumpsuit:
Everyone has to have that “stand out” piece in their wardrobe that is completely out there. For me, this season, it’s the strawberry jumpsuit. Yes, I AM calling it that. This kind of piece isn’t exactly the best piece for every occasion. On paper, it’s all wrong. The color is loud, the pattern is loud, and between the ruffles, the cut-outs,and the trendy wide leg pant, the whole design is just very very loud. So why is it a good piece? What is it about the strawberry suit that catches the eye?
It’s the fact that it’s different. Every girl and their mom (or maybe just their best friend) are rocking the denim skirt and crop top look. In fact, you’ve probably gone out with your friends on more than one occasion with matching outfits and NOT on purpose. It takes guts and confidence to walk outside in such an out there piece. But for statement makers out there who live to turn heads and pride themselves on being hella bad and hella boujee, something like this bright red, polka dotted, ruffle top, key hole cut-out, wide legged(and any other descriptor you can throw out there) jumpsuit is the prefect statement piece for your spring wardrobe.
Above is a not so rare siting of me not knowing how nothing items work, smh.
The Dress:
This black and gold polka dotted dress is the happy medium between the basic and the stand out pieces I’ve shown previously. It’s fun and flirty, but still toned down enough to wear just about anywhere. The cute off-shoulder design and ruffle bottom are two simple trends that make such a dark dress spring appropriate. And the polka-dots add a fun twist too!

Hopping To The Point:
So what’s my verdict? I deem the dots the hottest new trend of the spring season. They are a fun way to explore exciting patterns for spring without bringing back the iconic (but tired) floral pattern we all know so well. If you’re still scared to rock polka dots after reading this, my advice to you is to try the trend in moderation. Something like a polka dotted camisole under a jean jacket or a flirty skater dress with minimal dots can help ease you into the seemingly childlike trend and warm you up to all of its fashionable possibilities!
cute dresses. Love them <3 <3
